What's in a Seder?

Introduction:

Here are some fun activities whereby students can reflect upon the different components of a Passover Seder.

Seder Collage: Have students reflect upon the different things that take place during a Seder- the food we eat, the songs we sing, the things we say, the things we do. Have them create a mixed-media collage to represent each of the things that they suggest. Have them think of the size, texture and shapes of each of the objects that they suggest.

For example, when focusing on eggs, in addition to creating, drawings, paintings, etc. of eggs, explore the different features of eggs by doing the following:
  • textures - find fabric textures which are smooth like the egg shells
  • shapes - create things that are shaped like eggs
  • colors - create items that have two colors (to simulate the two colors inside an egg)- one on the outside and another in the center. for example- a flat piece of white felt fabric with a yellow pom-pom glued in the center.

Kadesh-Urchatz Placemat:

Materials:
  • 1 large sheet of paper (11 x 17") per student
  • 14 rectangular pieces of paper 4 1/2 x 2 1/4"

Directions:
  1. Have students decorate the 14 rectangular pieces of paper by drawing or gluing on pictures of the parts of the seder.

  2. Glue the rectangular pieces onto the large sheet of paper.

3-Dimensional Seder:

Using clay or playdough recreate the different parts of the seder. Have each student place his/her seder elements on a large styrofoam meat try, wooden base, etc..

Flannel Board Seder:

Create different parts of the seder by cutting pieces out of felt. Give each student one object. Discuss what happens at a Passover seder and have students place the different objects onto a flannel board (or flannel sheet) when the objects are mentioned.
