Jewish Month Collage

Introduction:

Elul is the last month in the Jewish calendar year and is a good time to reflect upon the past year. This Jewish Month collage provides a good opportunity for students to review the different themes and topics covered during the year and to prepare for the new year.

(Note: There are two ways to count the Jewish months-- 1)starting with Tishrei and Rosh Hashanah, the creation of the world and 2) starting with Nisan, the month of the Jewish liberation from Egypt which established the Jews as a separate nation. On this site we begin with Tishrei.)

Materials
  • "This New Month" Posters
  • 1 large piece of poster board, heavy duty paper, etc.
  • Collage Materials
  • Glue

Directions:
  1. Review each of the posters with your students and discuss the images presented on each one. Use the posters (or images printed out from the Web site) as springboards for discussions about each of the months and to review the various themes, holidays and special activities related to each month.

  2. Ask each student to pick a theme from one of the months (for example, creation in Tishrei or the Great Flood/Noah's Ark in Heshvan) to represent on a giant class collage. Have students create their own drawings, paintings, cut-out objects, etc. to include on the collage. Try to have at least one image or object from each of the months represented on the collage.

  3. Once students have finished adding their contributions to the collage, have the students discuss each of the images.

  4. Post the collage in the classroom to help students to reflect upon the current year which is drawing to an end and to prepare for the new year beginning in Tishrei.
