This Month's Torah Portions:

Genesis Chapter 1, Verse 7

The Second Day of Creation

"Vaya'as Elokim Es Harokia"

"And G-d made the firmament (Heaven)"

Overview of the Biblical Text:

On the second day of creation G-d separated the waters which were already present during the first day. He placed the heavens as a divider between the heavenly and earthly bodies of water.

The heavens above were fixed in place by G-d on the second day of creation.

Discussion Questions:
  • Where does the rain come from?
  • Where does the rainwater go to after it comes down?

Activity Ideas:
  1. Nature Walk - Take a nature walk to observe clouds; discuss different types of clouds and what they do; talk about the rainwater cycle.

  2. Water Activities - Demonstrate three properties of matter using water (ice, water, steam).

  3. Colorful water/oil art project - Add food color of choice to water. Fill a pretty jar half way with water and another quarter of the way up with oil. Screw on the lid and encourage children to shake as hard as they can. They can then watch the water and oil separate.
