This Month's Activities:

Natural New Year Cards

Introduction:

Students will enjoy making and sending these colorful nature print Rosh Hashanah cards.

Materials
  • Slices of pumpkins, cucumbers, broccoli, apples etc.
  • Leaves, sticks, acorns, etc.
  • Pie tins, cookie sheets, styrofoam meat trays, etc.
  • Paint
  • Sheets of Paper folded in half (to form a card)
Directions:
  1. Squirt paint into the paint trays (pie tins, cookie sheets, meat trays, etc.)

  2. Have students dip the vegetables, leaves, sticks, etc. into the paint and then press the objects onto the outside of their cards to create colorful patterns. Students can also apply the paint directly to the items with a paint brush and then press them onto their cards.
Variation:

Cut sponges into the shapes of fruits, vegetables and other items from nature, such as apples, leaves, bananas, strawberries, pumpkins, etc. and use these items instead of fruits, vegetables, etc. to create colorful nature print cards.

Opportunity for Discussion:
  • Why do we send cards to people for Rosh Hashanah?
  • How do you feel when you send a card to someone?
  • How do you feel when you receive a card from someone?
