Homemade Butter

Why This Recipe:

Try making butter with your students for Shavuot with this easy and fun recipe.

This butter recipe is a great activity to conduct as a science experiment. Before making the butter, have a conversation with students about where butter comes from. Save some heavy cream for students to examine after they have created the butter.
  • After students have created their butter, have students compare and contrast the cream with the butter- How does each one taste? feel? smell? look?

  • Have students document the butter-making process, by taking pictures and/or making drawings before, during and after the butter-making process.

Ingredients:
  • Heavy Cream
  • Salt (optional)

Additional Materials:
  • Baby jars with lids (1 per student)

Directions:
  1. Pour heavy cream into baby jars, filling the baby jar approximately 1/3 of the way. Cover the jars tightly with lids.

  2. Have students shake the jars until the liquid separates, leaving a lump of butter-like material in the jar. (This can take a while, so you might want to have students take turns shaking the jars.)

  3. Pour out the excess liquid and you have your very own butter.

  4. Note: Baby jars are the best jars to use, since it is easier for the students to shake the cream in those jars and less time is needed to shake the butter.

  5. Add salt to the butter if desired.

  6. Spread the butter on some bread-- Eat and enjoy!
