Chocolate Ark Cake

Why This Recipe:

This is a fun recipe to make during Heshvan, when learning about the story of Noah.

Ingredients:
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup shortening (Crisco, butter, margarine, etc.)
  • 1/3 cup of oil or applesauce
  • 1 cup of cocoa
  • 3 cups Flour
  • 2 cups water or milk
  • 1t salt
  • 1 1/2 t baking soda
  • 2 t baking powder
  • 1t vanilla extract
  • (optional) animal crackers or homemade animal cookies

Directions:
  1. Mix the sugar, shortening, oil (or applesauce) and cocoa together well.

  2. Alternate adding flour and water (1 cup at a time). Mix well after each cup.

  3. Add the rest of the ingredients. Mix well.

  4. Pour into greased 9 x 13" baking pan.

  5. Bake at 350 for approx. 45 min. or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

  6. Let cool for at least 1 hour.

  7. Lay cake down flat so the wide part is in front. Cut a 3" square from each top corner. Cut small triangles off of the top corners so that the top is pointy.

  8. Slightly round the bottom corners.

  9. Frost with dark brown icing (to look like tar).

  10. (Optional) Using animal crackers or animal cookies, place pairs of animals onto the frosting.
