This Month's Activities:

Sukkot Decorations

Introduction:

Tishrei is a time to celebrate friendship and the beauty of nature. Here is an activity which was inspired by an idea from Marjorie Kobrin, Director of Early Childhood Education at the Rosenthal Y. Students can wear these colorful bracelets or use them as decorations to hang in the Sukkah during Sukkot.

Materials
  • Contact paper
  • petals, flowers, stems, twigs, grass, leaves, small rocks, berries etc.
  • yarn, string or velcro tabs
Directions:
  1. Go on a nature walk with your students.

  2. Have the students collect petals, flowers, stems, twigs, grass, leaves, small rocks, berries, etc and to put them in a special nature bag.

  3. After returning to the classroom, talk to the students about the importance of friendship and sharing with others.

  4. Ask each student to give one thing from their nature bag to each student in the class.

  5. Give each student a piece of contact paper approximately 4 inches wide by 5 inches long. Along the length of the contact paper, pull the protective paper back halfway, leaving 2 inches by 5 inches of exposed sticky contact paper.

  6. Have the students place some of the nature materials (that they collected and received from other students) onto a piece of contact paper.

  7. Take the rest of the backing off of the contact paper and fold the contact paper over the objects to seal the bracelet.

  8. Attach yarn or Velcro tabs to the bracelet for children to wear around their wrists or attach a piece of string to hang the bracelet as a Sukkah decoration during Sukkot.

Opportunity for Discussion:
  • Use the bracelets to talk about nature and the environment.
  • Discuss how it felt to give materials to and receive materials from other students.
