This Month's Activities:

Jewish or Cultural Museum

Introduction:

Joseph wants to secure the area of Goshen for his family, so they will not begin to follow Egyptian customs.

"Jewish custom legitimizes adjusting our behavior "for the sake of peace" (mi-p'nei harkhei shalom), furthering good relations with those around us by avoiding offending their values and sensibilities." - Eitz Chayim Chumash

They lived in Goshen where they were able to practice their own customs without offending the Egyptians.

Materials:
  • Display area

Directions:
  1. Write a letter home to parents asking them to tour their home with their child, pointing out the Jewish or cultural objects in their home that have importance in their family. Choose one object the child may be able to display in school and share its history. Perhaps plan a celebration involving all of the families.

A Little Something Extra:

Discussion Topic

Joseph asks his brothers to tell Pharaoh they are breeders of livestock instead of shepherds, as shepherds were held in low esteem by the Egyptians.
  • Is this an insecurity on Joseph's part, or is he merely being sensitive to the feelings of his Egyptian neighbors?
  • Why is it important to preserve your family's traditions?
  • In what ways do you stay connected with your heritage?
