This Month's Activities:

Summer Collage

Introduction:

Celebrate and explore summer with your students by creating this colorful mixed-media collage.

Materials:
  • 1 large sheet of butcher paper, craft paper, etc.
  • Collage materials (Tissue paper, construction paper, pipe cleaners, yarn, sand, buttons, lace, egg cartons, toilet paper rolls, etc.)
  • Finger-paints, crayons, markers, etc.

Directions:
  1. Brainstorm with your students about summer. Have students come up with a list of things that they identify with summer-- Have them think of colors, textures, objects, insects, plants, food, activities, etc. that they associate with summer.

  2. Have students pick some things from the list to put on a classroom summer collage mural.

  3. Provide students with a variety of materials to use when creating items for the mural. Have students draw/paint directly on the large sheet of paper, as well as create cutout shapes and sculptures to hang from the collage. Here are some ideas of things to include:

    • Insects - ladybugs (made from construction paper, playdough, etc.), spiders (with egg carton sections and pipe cleaners), butterflies- (Cutout the shape of a butterfly from a piece of paper. Paint one side of the butterfly (for example, the right side). Fold the paper in half while paint is wet and open immediately to create a mirrored effect.

    • Plants, Flowers and Trees - Colorful Flowers (made from tissue paper, construction paper, etc. or painted/drawn directly onto the large paper); Fruit trees

    • Summer food - Ice cream, fruit (make papiermache fruit and hang from the mural), etc.

    • Sky and ground - Create the sky and grass by painting directly onto the mural (finger painting or sponge painting-- dipping sponges in paint and then pressing them onto the paper--work well) and/or use yarn to create the grass, glue sand on ground to represent dirt/beach.
