Mount Sinai Ideas
Introduction:
G-D told the Children of Israel not to allow their flocks to graze on Mt. Sinai. It is, therefore, assumed that Mt. Sinai must have been rich and green with vegetation. It is tradition to decorate the synagogue with branches or potted plants on Shavuot to represent the plant life on Mount Sinai. Here are some activity suggestions to help you and your students explore Mount Sinai and to celebrate the flowers that were blooming there:
- Miniature Mount Sinai - Have the class create a miniature version of Mount Sinai using papier-mâché, clay or play dough, or a "giant" Mount Sinai by covering play equipment or boxes with brown butcher-block paper. Have them decorate the mountain with painted or paper flowers, etc.
- Carpet of Flowers -
- Have each student make flowers
tissue paper flowers - traditional - fan-fold the tissue, tie in the center with a twistie and then gently pull the layers apart as you pull them up.
paper cup flowers-Cut out flat shapes of construction paper and glue a small paper cup in the middle--daffodil style.
- Have each student tape his/her flower onto a long green "carpet" (a plastic tablecloth works well).
- Hang the carpet on the door of the classroom for all to see, or use to decorate your Mount Sinai or the area where the school celebrates Shavuot.
- Classroom Decorations -
Decorate the room with flowers and greens, made out of a variety of media-- paper (drawings, paintings, cut-out flower shapes, etc.), cutout photographs, pictures from magazines, playdough sculptures, papiermache creations, etc
