This Month's Activities:

Ten Plagues Package

Introduction:

Acting out the ten plagues has become a popular fixture in many family seders where young children attend. Have each child make a kit for acting out the ten plagues.

Directions:
  1. Give each student a shoebox, bakery box, etc. to serve as his/her "Ten Plagues Kit".

  2. Discuss the ten plagues with your students and why we remember them on Passover. Have your students think of ways to recreate the different plagues with objects that they can find at home or in school. Here are some ideas:

    • Plague # 1: Blood- red food coloring or paint and water in a sealed jar.

    • Plague # 2: Frogs- a frog puppet out of a small paper bag.

    • Plague # 3: Lice-
      1. Cut apart the "cups" from a cardboard egg carton.
      2. Paint each cup brown or black.
      3. Bore a small hole in the four corners of the little cup.
      4. Thread a black pipe cleaner through the holes, double it over and twist to make little legs.
      5. Add two pointed teeth and googly eyes.

    • Plague # 4: Beasts- An animal mask or a scary drawing.

    • Plague # 5: Sickness- A cardboard Thermometer by cutting out an oval cardboard shape and putting lines on it. Children can indicate a fever by drawing or painting most of it red (from the bottom up).

    • Plague # 6: Boils- Red stickers

    • Plague # 7: Hail- Mini kosher marshmallows or cotton balls

    • Plague # 8: Locusts- Plastic bugs or clickers

    • Plague # 9: Darkness- A black mask without eye holes

    • Plague # 10: Death of the first born- A condolence card that says, "Death of the First Born"
