Dreidel Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter or margarine softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 t vanilla
  • 2t baking powder
  • 3 cups flour
  • extra flour (for covering surface to roll out dough and to coat cookie cutter)
  • Hanukkah cookie cutters (dreidel, menorah, etc.)
  • cardboard cutouts in the shapes of the 4 Hebrew letters featured on dreidels (Nun, Gimmel, Shin and Hay)
  • colored sugar

Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

  2. Mix all of the ingredients together.

  3. Knead dough until stiff.

  4. Divide dough into two balls

  5. On floured surface roll each ball into a 12" circle about 1/8" thick.

  6. Dip dreidel cookie cutter into flour and press onto dough to create dreidel-shaped cookie. Repeat.

  7. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet 6-7 minutes in 400 degree oven or until cookies are lightly brown.

  8. Let cool.

  9. Place one of the cardboard cutout letters ontop of one of the dreidel cookies.

  10. Sprinkle colored sugar on the cookie, so that it covers the part of the cookie not covered by the letter.

  11. Remove the carboard from the cookie to reveal a dreidel cookie with a Hebrew letter.

  12. Repeat steps 9-11, using the 4 dreidel letters
