Pita


Why This Recipe:

Here is a recipe for Pita Bread from JCC preschool teacher Sarit in Massachusetts.

Ingredients:
  • 1 oz yeast
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Directions:
  1. Mix yeast, 1/2 cup warm water and sugar together.
     
  2. Let stand until foams (10-15 minutes).
     
  3. Add the flour, the rest of the water (1 1/2 cups) and salt to yeast mixture.
     
  4. Knead until becomes smooth dough. (Add flour if too sticky).
     
  5. Divide the dough into 6 parts.
     
  6. Roll each part into a ball.
     
  7. Place the balls on a floured tray and spread a bit of flour over the balls.
     
  8. Cover with a clean towel, and let rise for about an hour.
     
  9. Roll each ball with a pin to about 1/2 inch thick.
     
  10. Arrange the balls on a greased baking tray, and bake on high for about 10-15 minutes or until golden brown.
