Rainbow Jello

Why This Recipe:

This is a fun recipe to make during Heshvan, when learning about the story of Noah.

Ingredients:

Packets of the following colors of jello:
  • red (raspberry, cherry, strawberry, etc.)
  • orange (orange)
  • yellow (lemon)
  • green (lime)
  • blue (berry blue)
  • purple (grape)
1 clear plastic cup per student

Directions:
  1. Make Jello following the directions on the Jello packet, preparing each flavor separately.

  2. Pour about 1/4 inch of purple jello into the bottom of each cup. (We are going to build the rainbow in reverse order, starting with purple and ending with red, so that the red jello is on top.)

  3. Wait for the jello to become firm (approximately 1 hour) and then add 1/4 inch of the blue jello.

  4. Add the green, yellow, orange and red jello one layer at a time, waiting for each layer to harden before adding the next.

  5. Now each student can enjoy eating his/her rainbow-colored jello.

Related Activities:
  1. This is a good opportunity to discuss the colors that make up a rainbow- red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Older children might enjoy learning the name "Roy G. Biv"- Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet to help them remember the colors.

  2. Have students experiment with the order in which they add the jello colors and observe how changing the order of the colors changes the way their rainbow looks.

  3. Discuss the story of Noah and the reason why G-D created rainbows.
