Rainsticks
Introduction:
The month of Heshvan, when we learn about Noah and the Great Rains, is a great time to create rainsticks. Students will enjoy creating and using these rainsticks during the month of Heshvan and throughout the year.
Materials
- Wrapping paper roll, paper towel roll or toilet paper roll (The larger the roll, the more sound that will be produced.)
- Q-tips with one end cut off (cutting them in half works well) or child-safe plastic nails. (The more q-tips or nails, the better the sound.)
- Masking tape
- Push pins
- Your choice of decorations for the outside (glue and tissue paper, paints, markers, crayons, yarn, feathers, etc.)
- Beans, rice and/or un-popped corn
Directions:
- Using a push pin, poke a hole near the top of the roll starting from the outside and pushing the pin into the roll. Continue to make holes spiraling down the length of the roll with the push pin. (This can be done ahead to save time or injury for younger children.)
- Push q-tips in so that the fuzzy part rests against the outside of the roll. Make sure to look into the ends of the roll from time to time - it looks really cool as the pattern of q-tips emerges! (Note: If using the plastic nails, tape over the ends of the nails so they cannot come out.)
- Tape one end of the roll firmly with masking tape.
- Pour beans, rice, un-popped corn, or some combination into the roll.
- Tape the open end of the roll securely.
- Decorate the outside of the roll with crayons, markers, paint, tissue paper, yarn, feathers, etc.
How to use the Rainstick:
- Slowly tilt the rainstick back and forth, making sure not to hit the person next to you, and let your imagination run wild!
- Try using the rainsticks to produce rain sounds during songs about rain, such as Mabul.
- Try using different sizes of rolls to make the rainsticks and compare the sound that is made by the different rolls.
- Compare the sounds of rainsticks with the different ingredients (beans, rice, UN-popped corn or a mixture) inside. Discuss the differences in sounds and why the sounds are different.
